Description
Samaria Gorge is the best-known protected mountain ecosystem in western Crete and the centrepiece of Samaria National Park. The dramatic gorge descends through the White Mountains from Xyloskalo near Omalos toward Agia Roumeli. Its exceptional biodiversity includes numerous endemic Cretan plants and animals, while the surrounding mountains provide important habitat for the Cretan wild goat, or kri-kri. The full gorge crossing is a demanding mountain hike and visitors must follow the National Park's seasonal opening, safety and conservation rules.
