Description

The Paleochora coastal ecosystems, on the southwest coast of Crete, include a diverse mix of sandy beaches, rocky shores, small wetlands, and nearby river mouths. This variety of habitats supports rich biodiversity, especially seabirds, migratory species, coastal fish, and many insects adapted to salt and sand environments. The coastline is also influenced by seasonal rivers and streams that bring freshwater and nutrients into the sea, creating productive nearshore ecosystems. Vegetation ranges from dune grasses and salt-tolerant shrubs to more lush riparian growth inland. Overall, the Paleochora area is valued for its relatively unspoiled coastal nature and its importance as a transition zone between land and sea habitats.
