Description

Sougia is a small coastal village on the southern coast of Chania, Crete, known for its rugged cliffs, pebbly beaches, and crystal-clear waters. The surrounding area is rich in biodiversity, with pine forests and gorges providing habitats for many bird species, such as falcons and seabirds, as well as endemic plants. Along the shoreline, you can spot crabs, sea urchins, and occasionally monk seals resting on secluded rocks. The nearby mountains and gorges are home to reptiles like lizards and snakes, and the area’s flora attracts pollinators including butterflies and bees. Wildlife observation in Sougia is especially rewarding in the quieter seasons when the village is less crowded and animals are more active. The combination of marine and terrestrial ecosystems makes it a fascinating spot for nature enthusiasts.
