Description
The Keritis Estuary, located on the north coast of Chania, is a protected wetland where the Keritis River meets the sea, creating a rich mosaic of habitats. This estuary is a vital stopover for migratory birds, including herons, egrets, and various species of ducks. Its shallow waters and reed beds support amphibians, fish, and small invertebrates, while the surrounding sand dunes and scrub provide shelter for lizards and small mammals. Seasonal blooms of native plants attract pollinators like bees and butterflies, adding to the ecological diversity. Because of its combination of freshwater and coastal environments, the estuary is an excellent spot for observing both aquatic and terrestrial wildlife.
