Description
The Akrotiri Salt Pans, located on the Akrotiri Peninsula near Chania, Crete, are shallow, man-made lagoons used for salt production but also serve as vital habitats for wildlife. These salt flats attract a wide variety of birds, especially flamingos, herons, and waders, which feed and rest in the shallow waters. The salty environment supports specialized invertebrates like brine shrimp, which in turn provide food for the birds. Seasonal vegetation and the surrounding scrubland offer shelter for small mammals, reptiles, and insects. Because of their combination of human-made structures and natural habitats, the Akrotiri Salt Pans are an important hotspot for birdwatching and ecological study in Crete.
