Description

Koustogerako Gorge is a dramatic and rugged canyon located in the southwestern part of Crete, not far from Chania. It’s carved through steep limestone cliffs, creating narrow passages, rock faces, and small caves, which give the gorge a wild, untamed character. The area is rich in biodiversity: it’s a haven for birds of prey like griffon vultures and Bonelli’s eagles, while smaller birds, lizards, and endemic plants thrive along the rocky slopes. Koustogerako also has historical significance, with old stone villages and remnants of Cretan resistance during World War II tucked in and around the gorge. Hikers and nature lovers are drawn to its challenging trails, panoramic views, and the sense of isolation that makes it a true escape into Crete’s rugged interior.
