Description
Platanias, a village near Chania, is known not only for its charming surroundings but also for the network of seasonal streams that flow through the area. These streams swell with rainfall during the wet months, creating temporary waterways that nourish the local flora and provide important habitats for wildlife. Along the stream banks, you can find amphibians such as frogs and toads, insects like dragonflies and water beetles, and birds that come to feed or drink, including herons and wagtails. In the drier months, the streams shrink or dry up, but the surrounding vegetation—olive trees, shrubs, and wildflowers—remains, sustaining small mammals, lizards, and pollinators. For nature enthusiasts, the seasonal streams offer a dynamic environment, where wildlife activity varies noticeably between wet and dry seasons, making every visit unique.
