Description
Kolymbari Fields, located near the coastal town of Kolymbari in western Crete, are a rich and accessible area for observing local wildlife. The flat, cultivated lands interspersed with patches of shrubs and small wetlands provide habitats for a variety of birds, including herons, egrets, and migratory species during the season. Small mammals like hedgehogs and rabbits are often found along the field edges, while lizards and other reptiles thrive among the rocks and vegetation. Insects, especially butterflies and bees, are abundant in the warmer months, supporting the valley’s food chain. Walking through the fields at dawn or dusk gives visitors the best chance to see wildlife while enjoying the peaceful blend of cultivated landscapes and natural habitats.
