Description

The Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, also known as the Catholic Cathedral of Crete, is a Roman Catholic church in Chania, Crete. It is the cathedral of the Diocese of Crete. The first Catholic parish church in Chania following the Turkish conquest of the city was a small chapel housed in the Capuchin residence not far from the old harbour in 1675. At the beginning of the 18th century, the Capuchin friars built their monastery on Odos Chalidon and established a chapel on the ground floor dedicated to the Assumption of Mary, or simply the Assumption.
