Description
Arkoudospilios, also known as Bear Cave or the Cave of Panagia Arkoudiotissa, lies along the historic walking route from Gouverneto Monastery toward Katholiko Monastery. Its name comes from a remarkable stalagmite resembling a bear bending over a small pool of water. Archaeological inscriptions connected with Apollo and Artemis indicate that the cave served as an ancient sanctuary before becoming associated with Christian worship. Today a chapel dedicated to Panagia Arkoudiotissa occupies the cave, creating a fascinating combination of geology, ancient religion and Orthodox tradition. Access is exclusively on foot along the trail through the rugged Akrotiri landscape.
