Description

Chalase Gorge, located in the Chania region of Crete, is a narrow, rocky gorge with steep cliffs and a stream running through it during the wetter months. Its rugged terrain and varied microhabitats support a rich diversity of wildlife. Birds of prey such as eagles and falcons use the cliffs for nesting, while smaller birds like warblers and swifts forage among the shrubs. Reptiles, amphibians, and insects thrive in the shaded crevices and along the stream, and small mammals like hares and hedgehogs are also present. Seasonal wildflowers and shrubs attract pollinators, making Chalase Gorge a vibrant ecological corridor and an excellent site for observing Crete’s inland fauna.
