Description
The coastal reed beds near Chrysoskalitissa Monastery, on the southwestern coast of Crete, form a unique and ecologically rich habitat. These reeds grow along small inlets and brackish areas where freshwater meets the sea, creating shelter and breeding grounds for many bird species, including herons, egrets, and wagtails. The reed beds also support a variety of small mammals, amphibians, and insects, making the area lively with wildlife, especially in spring and early summer. Salt-tolerant plants such as sea lavender and samphire flourish alongside the reeds, adding to the biodiversity of the coastal ecosystem. For nature enthusiasts, Chrysoskalitissa’s reeds offer excellent opportunities for birdwatching and observing the interactions between coastal plants and wildlife in a relatively undisturbed setting.
