Description
Gavdopoula is a small, uninhabited islet located just northwest of Gavdos, off the southern coast of Crete. Its remote and rugged terrain, with steep cliffs and rocky shores, makes it largely untouched by human activity, creating a haven for wildlife. The island is particularly important for seabirds, including shearwaters and gulls, which nest on its cliffs, and it serves as a stopover for migratory birds crossing the Mediterranean. The surrounding waters are rich in marine life, including fish, octopuses, and occasionally monk seals, while the sparse vegetation on the island supports insects, lizards, and small mammals. Gavdopoula’s isolation and natural features make it a fascinating spot for wildlife observation, especially for birdwatchers and marine enthusiasts seeking undisturbed habitats.
