Description

Koiliaris River (frequently spelled Kiliaris) is one of the most important and scientifically studied perennial rivers in the Chania regional unit of western Crete. Flowing from the underground springs of the White Mountains near the historic village of Armenoi, the river winds through lush valleys and plane-tree groves across Apokoronas before emptying into the Cretan Sea at Kalyves Beach. Renowned for its rich biodiversity, clean freshwater ecosystems, and historical remains along its banks—including old watermills and Venetian structures—it provides a picturesque and ecologically vital natural corridor.
