Description
Meskla Valley, nestled inland from Chania, is a lush and tranquil area that offers a rich experience for wildlife observation. The valley’s gently rolling terrain, dotted with olive groves, wild shrubs, and seasonal streams, provides habitats for a variety of animals. Small mammals like hares and hedgehogs are common, while the rocky areas and stone walls shelter lizards and snakes. Birdlife is particularly abundant, with raptors such as kestrels and buzzards soaring overhead, and smaller songbirds flitting among the trees and shrubs. In spring, wildflowers bloom across the valley, attracting butterflies, bees, and other pollinators, which in turn support the local food web. Walking the valley’s paths, especially in the quiet early morning or late afternoon, allows visitors to observe wildlife in a peaceful setting while enjoying the scenic beauty of Crete’s inland landscapes.
