Description

The Tersanas Wetlands are a small coastal wetland area on the Akrotiri Peninsula near Chania. This seasonal ecosystem forms around a shallow lagoon and surrounding marshy ground that fills with water mainly during the wetter months. It supports a variety of wildlife, especially migratory and resident birds, along with amphibians, insects, and wetland plants adapted to changing water levels. The area is relatively quiet and undeveloped, making it a useful stopover habitat for birds traveling across the Mediterranean. Overall, the Tersanas Wetlands are a modest but ecologically valuable natural site that highlights the diversity of coastal habitats in Crete.
